I’ll be honest, I was never drawn to Jamie Foxx as a musician, especially as it seems he was only ever a featuring artist. The only song I think I even like of his was Gold Digger which is technically a Kanye West song (yes, Kanye West – I’m not sinking to this Ye stuff – especially as it was more recent than the song in question). It also seems that his music career and acting career happened concurrently.

Sleepless

You want to know the mark of a good film and good actor? It’s when even though you’ve been shown from the very beginning that Foxx’s character is a good guy, I was still sitting there watching it thinking ‘Oh no! He’s a dirty cop’ which with the plot line of the film felt like an interesting twist in itself anyway. More importantly, it is clear that Foxx has been doing some sort of fight training especially when you look at his main fights with big guys like David Harbour.

Miami Vice

I’ll be honest, I thought Foxx’s role would have been a lot more balanced with Colin Farrell’s than it was. This is probably going to sound like an odd comment but there are two sex scenes in this film and in a way only one of them is even relevant to the plot of the film – and I’ll tell you what, it isn’t Jamie’s. I feel like they could have introduced the relationship between Tubbs and Trudy without making it automatically sexual, especially as there’s such an emotional ending – he clearly loved her.

Collateral

There’s two things I want to say about this film before I get to the crux of this paragraph. 1) I’m still unsure about the grey hair and beard on Tom Cruise, mainly the beard if I’m honest. 2) I never realised the number of familiar faces in this film – from Jason Statham to Jada Pinkett Smith, only cameos mind but still. In comparison to his other roles mentioned in this article, Jamie’s role of Max is actually quite subdued. He is an unwilling accomplice to a hit man’s killings until he reaches his turning point in the hospital scene and even then, you can see in his eyes that no matter how brave Max felt throwing the briefcase off the bridge, he is clearly still terrified of Vincent. This, along with the scene in the club, there is no way Max would have got the drop on Vincent the way he does. Vincent even says ‘I do this for a living’ and, honestly, the ending slightly ruins the film for me.

Honorary Mentions

I have to start here with a recent film that I cannot wait to watch and that is Day Shift! Who can resist a vampire hunter film with Jamie Foxx and Snoop Dogg? Anyway, possible one of my favourite Jamie Foxx film is Django Unchained but that’s mainly because I’m a big fan of anything by Quinten Tarantino. He has even turned his hand to being a Marvel villain – playing Electro in both The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and Spider-Man: No Way Home.
