WARNING: This Article May Contain Spoilers
I’ll be honest, outside of maybe Eminem, Dr Dre, Snoop Dogg and a little bit of Busta Rhymes – I have little to no interest in rap music. Because of this Ice-T was never on my radar. Of course, I knew who he was because of songs he’s featured on and I am aware of his TV work which I’ll mention later but other than that he is a complete unknown to me so let’s take the time to get to know him a little better together…
Stranded
In truth, I don’t really get the point of the subplot in which Ice-T is included. This could have been left as a simple disaster film without the hint of conspiracy. However, the world isn’t perfect and this is the film we’ve got. Ice-T plays a wise-cracking NSA agent intent on taking down those responsible for trying to sabotage the space station. I can only imagine that the way he plays this character isn’t too different from his role in Law and Order.
Final Voyage
From one disaster film to another and a swap from good guy to bad guy. Actually, I guess you could actually describe this as more of a heist film at sea. I’ll be honest, and I feel horrible for feeling this way but, something about Ice-T’s lisp takes a lot away from what I’m sure is supposed to be a rather menacing character. This film is so close to cheesy that all that’s missing is Steven Seagal bursting in to save the day. You would honestly have thought this was a TV film or at least straight to video, like Stranded, but unfortunately for cinema goers in the 90s – it hit the silver screen.
Guardian
This was a pretty pointless film, but that’s not me saying I didn’t watch it to the end. You know, don’t start something you can’t finish and all that. The way this film started, I slightly geared myself up for more of an Exorcist style story (if you’ve seen it, or any of The Exorcist prequels, you’ll understand what I mean if you watch this) and I was unfortunately let down. Now to Ice-T’s involvement, just as pointless. He’s in it for all of about 5 minutes and really it feels like a scene that’s been put in just to move the plot along and make the connection between the Chaos drug and the jars at the very beginning – you know, for the less observant viewers out there anyway.
Honorary Mentions
It’s rare that I talk about TV work in these articles but you can’t talk about Ice-T and not mention his work on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. However what I didn’t remember was that his character from Law & Order turned up in Chicago PD (must have been a bad cross-over that I wiped from my memory). However, this wasn’t the first time he had played a member of law enforcement. In 1999, he played Agent Taja in Sonic Impact and in 2000, he played Agent Williams in The Alternate.
