I was trying to find out exactly who Druig was in the comic books and it seems not much is actually known about him other than he is Ikaris’ cousin (that wasn’t mentioned in the film…) and worked for the KGB…does this make Barry Keoghan’s Irish accent out of place? Some also think his character may have been based on the Greek deity, Dolos, for the Eternals film.

Dunkirk

I’m going to be completely honest – I went to the cinema to watch this when it first came out and it genuinely felt like more than 1hr 46 minutes! I just felt it was slightly artsy. I want to say this film is kind of broken up into segments – at least at the start anyway, and we meet Keoghan in segment 2 The Sea: One Day. He plays George who doesn’t actually speak very much – but then, no one really does. What I did notice however is that this may be the only film I’ve seen him in without his natural Irish accent. I’d always thought that his character was related to Mr Dawson, played by Mark Rylance, and Peter but it seems he’s either a friend of Peter’s or just some local boy. I actually forget, however, that Cillian Murphy’s character accidentally kills George but I love the fact that they don’t tell him he is the cause of George’s death.

Calm With Horses

You actually hear Barry Keoghan before you see him in this film. His role Dymphna is only a small one in comparison to the main storyline, which focuses on Douglas trying to balance his violent side with being a good father. It seems to me that the main purpose of Dymphna is as Douglas’s driver even though he’s supposed be to the head of his father’s side of the family business. It’s weird to see him go from the sweet young lad in Dunkirk, to quite a dark instigator of violence in this. The problem is you can see that really his character is all talk – the fact that in the pub, Douglas has to finish what he started.

Standby

Honestly, I was starting to think I was going to have to watch this film a second time because I’d blinked and missed Keoghan’s appearance! 1 hour into the film he finally arrives, playing young pot-head Crusty. He speaks very little, a few lines intermingled with giggling because he’s high. I’ll be completely honest, his character is pretty hard to talk about because he’s barely on the screen for 5 minutes but then again it is hard to get hold of many of the films he starred in before Eternals so here we are.

Honorary Mentions

For an actor that I had never heard of before, Keoghan had actually done quite a bit before taking on the role of Druig in Eternals. For example, Dunkirk was actually the second war film he appeared in as he had already featured as Sean Bannon in ’71. I wanted to watch Trespass Against Us just to find out why his character was called Windows but I was unlucky not get hold of it. He also starred alongside MCU compatriot Evan Peters in American Animals.
