Interestingly, the comic book character of Gamora was used as a weapon by Thanos, however what is not revealed in the film is that his main plan for her was to assassinate Adam Warlock – the character played by Will Poulter in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. The one thing that does stay the same however, is that she does join the Guardians, unlike her sister Nebula, but after Thanos has already had the Infinity Gauntlet and been destroyed.

The Haunting

For someone credited 3rd on this film, it takes a long time for Saldana’s character to actually appear. We are introduced to Cassie, an ESP test subject, around 20 minutes into the film and she’s an extremely feisty character. I was actually starting to think that this was going to be the only scene she was involved in until 20 minutes later when she randomly appears at Bryan’s house. Along with the feistiness, she has a dark sense of humour – her response to “This is Aunt’s room, the one that died.” is “Oh, so it’s vacant?” I started to wonder if her character was being used to con Bryan into giving up the house, because there was something about her smile when she ran up the stairs.

Colombiana

Something about this film really bothers me before we’re introduced to Zoe Saldana! If Cataleya is already equipped enough to stab Marco and escape the way she does – why did her father have to explain the escape plan to her? Would she not know this already? For a moment I didn’t think we were going to see Saldana as the older Cataleya until much later into the film – I was slightly expecting mini montage of her uncle training her to kill in order to take revenge for her father and mother. Saldana was a really good choice, her cat-like figure working well for the opening killing, however I found it quite odd that with how strong her accent was when she first came to America – there is no way she would have lost it completely in 15 years.

Guess Who?

For a film about a father meeting his daughter’s boyfriend for the first time, I felt like the role of the daughter was smaller than expected, the daughter being Zoe Saldana. But I think that’s because it was all about the comedy of errors that takes place between  the father and her boyfriend, with her being stuck in the middle of the two of them, as well as Bernie Mac being the bigger actor at the time. I didn’t realise that this was actually a remake of Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner just with a switch in race. However, I do love the fact that she plays a brilliant joke while keeping a straight face when she fakes only just realising that Simon is white

Honorary Mentions

I can’t talk about Zoe Saldana and not mention in her small part in Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl. She also plays the part of Uhura in the new timeline Star Trek films with Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto. Her earliest film role was in Get Over It which is based on Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
