OK, I think a lot of people are going to question me referring to her as Black Widow as Florence’s first appearance is only credited as Yelena Romanoff…and this is the same for Thunderbolts but in the comic books she is the second Black Widow, after Natasha. The only thing I can’t seem to find is if their characters were actually sisters on the comics as all I can find is that they were both Russian spies.
Midsommar
I’ll be honest, I cannot rate this film highly enough! Some might say that this is technically a thriller over a horror film but I think the new elevated horror genre slightly blurs the lines between the two now. I would actually say this film aims for more the shock factor than the gore side – especially as it opening is extremely dark but it doesn’t continue in this vain for at least an hour. Florence Pugh plays Dani, the last surviving member of the Ardor family, who takes a trip with her boyfriend and his friends to Sweden during Midsommar (hence the title of the film). The problem is that this is hard to talk about without giving too much away or else it would lose its shock factor but what I will say is prepare yourself for some scenes that may be deemed as disturbing but great filming along with genius scene transitions and some amazing acting from Florence Pugh. Especially with everything Dani goes through in this film, along with dealing with an arsehole of a boyfriend! What I do enjoy is that even though Dani is the main focus of the opening few scenes – once they arrive in Sweden, the focus is spread across the group.
Fighting With My Family
I got a little confused at the start of this film because of the fact that Florence is credited as Saraya – then I found out that that is Paige’s real name! When you look at photos of the real Saraya Bevan, you can see why she was picked to play her. I love the chemistry between her and Jack Lowden as brother and sister as well as the fact that they kept her choosing the name Paige because of Charmed. Truthfully, I chose this film to show that Florence can do something other than elevated horror and that is definitely the case – especially as deep down, this film is a reminder that you should not have to change who you are to fit in and get what you want!
Don’t Worry Darling
I don’t think I could begin to describe exactly what this is film is! I started to get Stepford Wives vibes at the beginning but then weird things seem to begin to happen – like empty eggs. This may possibly fit into the elevated horror category – especially as the scene with Margaret’s death is rather reminiscent of the old people dying in Midsommar. Pugh plays Alice, the young woman who gradually starts to question the world around her. I love the watching the change in Alice’s character as she starts to awaken to everything around her. We know Pugh can play the broken character but watching her change from a happy wife with no worries to a woman terrified of the world around her is amazing! There’s a real mind-blown moment towards the end but I really don’t want to spoil it for anyone.
Honorary Mentions
Now, I want to start off by mentioning that her first starring role was alongside another MCU star, Maisie Williams, in The Falling. Following this, she also had parts in King Lear and Little Women before taking on the role of the badass Yelena as well as a starring role in horror film, Malevolent.
