The Eternals, on the whole, are a group of superheroes that I knew absolutely nothing about until the release of the film. What I have discovered however is that the character of Kingo was skilled with a sword in the comic books and I feel it is now a shame that this didn’t feature as part of his character in The Eternals. Additionally, with that in mind, I don’t see him as coming across on paper as such a comedic character.

Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates

There is very little I can actually say about this appearance of Kumail but this is definitely the weirdest and borderline disturbing scene I’ve seen. OK, it’s Kumail’s only scene in this whole film but for me, that’s enough because even though it does add another layer of humour to the film, it genuinely made me a little uncomfortable to watch. I’ll be honest, it’s one of those moments that is really hard to put into words exactly how odd it is and, also, if I go into too much detail it will probably ruin quite how funny it is for those of you who haven’t seen the film yet. All I’m going to say is, Kumail plays a masseuse in a Hawaiian hotel who is paid by Alice to help Jeanie, the bride, to ‘relax’ – by any means necessary it seems…

Stuber

For me, this is an updated version of Taxi but in my opinion much funnier. This is probably because there is much more of a straight guy/comedy guy divide. I think this is the first time I’ve seen Kumail in a lead role – you know as he is ‘Stuber’ (Stu-Uber, took me a moment to actually get it but I’ll be embarrassed if I missed him mention it during the film) and I definitely wasn’t too sure about him. His tone of comedy is quite dry even though it is pretty funny but it doesn’t quite hold up as a lead character. However, his co-star (Dave Bautista) isn’t exactly flawless either which makes the partnership overall pretty awkward.

The Lovebirds

This is the first time that it doesn’t feel like Kumail is trying to be funny for comedy’s sake. There are actual moments in this where I feel like he has chosen to actually play the comedy straight. This film is definitely a case of wrong place wrong time for Jibran and Leilani as they become witnesses, and I guess accomplices, to a murder. I guess that’s the simple way to explain what they get mixed up in as they try to clear their names. This is probably really silly and in most films they would have just walked out of the pharmacy but I love the fact that they actually went to the counter and paid for everything. I’ll say this much, this is one difficult way to get your relationship back on track. In comparison to the other films in this article, I actually found this pretty funny. Add to that Kumail and Issa Rae has really good chemistry even when the couple look on the verge of breaking up.

Honorary Mentions

It genuinely not possible to find a film that Kumail has starred in that doesn’t also have the word “comedy” attached to it. For example, he starred in comedy-horror Hell Baby but was simply credited as Cable Guy so I assume it wasn’t a very big part. He also starred in Bad Milo!, another comedy-horror before making cameo appearances in TV series like Veep and Drunk History.
